Smart door locks have evolved far beyond simple keyless entry. As homeowners increasingly expect convenience, security, and connected living, display-equipped smart locks are becoming the new standard.

By 2026, more than half of newly launched mid- to high-end smart locks are expected to feature built-in displays. Yet when purchasing one, most buyers still focus almost exclusively on security features—lock cylinders, fingerprint recognition, facial authentication, and encryption.

Ironically, one of the components users interact with every single day often receives the least attention: the display.

A poorly designed screen can make visitor images difficult to see in bright daylight, reduce visibility during nighttime monitoring, respond slowly to touch, and even drain the battery much faster than expected.

If you're comparing smart locks with displays, here are the display specifications that deserve closer attention.

1. Resolution and Pixel Density: Clarity Depends on More Than Screen Size

Many products advertise a "4-inch HD display," but screen size alone tells you very little about image quality.

For a typical 4-inch display:

  • 320 × 480 (around 150 PPI): Comparable to older-generation mobile phones, with blurred facial details and noticeable jagged text. 
  • 480 × 800 (around 220 PPI): Acceptable for everyday use, offering readable text and reasonably clear images. 
  • 720 × 1280 (300+ PPI): Comparable to modern smartphones, making it much easier to distinguish visitor faces, package details, and security footage. 

Display technology also matters.

Many entry-level products still use TN panels, which have narrow viewing angles and noticeable colour shift when viewed from different positions. An IPS display, by contrast, offers viewing angles of up to 178°, delivering consistent image quality whether you're standing, sitting, or viewing the screen from the side.

Buying tip: Don't ask only about screen size. Always check the resolution, pixel density (PPI), and whether the display uses IPS technology.

 

2. Brightness and Contrast: Visibility Day and Night

Two of the most overlooked specifications are also two of the most important.

For indoor smart lock displays, a brightness level of at least 350 cd/m² is recommended.

Anything lower can become difficult to read near windows or in brightly lit entrances. Premium displays typically reach 400–450 cd/m², remaining clear even under strong ambient light.

Contrast determines how well dark and bright areas are separated.

A ratio of 1000:1 should be considered the minimum acceptable standard. Higher-end displays can achieve 1500:1 or more using local dimming technology, producing clearer night-time images with significantly improved shadow detail.

When evaluating a display in person:

  • View it from roughly a 45-degree angle. Significant colour shift usually indicates limited viewing performance. 
  • Shade the display with your hand to simulate a darker environment. If faces become grey or lose detail, the contrast performance is likely insufficient. 

 

3. Response Time and Refresh Rate: Smooth Performance Improves Security

When live video appears to lag or moving people leave visible trails, many assume the camera is at fault.

In reality, display performance is often the limiting factor. If the display response time exceeds 25 ms, fast-moving subjects can produce obvious motion blur or ghosting, making it harder to accurately identify people approaching the door.

A response time of 16 ms or below is generally considered acceptable, while 12 ms or faster, combined with a 60 Hz or higher refresh rate, delivers a much smoother viewing experience comparable to that of a modern smartphone.

Some premium solutions further improve responsiveness through overdrive acceleration technology, reducing motion blur even further.

Simple test: Activate the live camera preview and wave your hand quickly in front of the camera. A quality display should render movement smoothly without obvious trailing.


4. Power Efficiency: The Display Is One of the Biggest Energy Consumers

Because smart locks operate on batteries, display efficiency has a direct impact on battery life. An unoptimised 4-inch IPS display can account for as much as 40% of the lock's total standby power consumption.

Using the same 7750 mAh battery, one smart lock may last only around six months, while another with an optimised display system can operate for up to ten months before requiring a recharge.

One feature worth looking for is adaptive brightness, which automatically adjusts screen brightness according to ambient light. This not only improves viewing comfort but also helps extend battery life.

Flagship smart locks are increasingly adopting a dual-display architecture, featuring a compact outdoor display alongside a larger indoor screen.

One detail that's easy to overlook is display consistency.

If the two displays have noticeably different colour temperatures or brightness levels, the overall user experience feels inconsistent. Leading manufacturers now perform colour calibration across both displays to deliver a more seamless visual experience.

 

Touch Interaction Continues to Improve

Touch displays are enabling richer interaction, allowing users to review recorded footage, switch camera views, and activate emergency functions directly from the screen.

However, not all touch technologies perform equally well.

Lower-cost solutions may suffer from poor responsiveness or accidental touches. Higher-quality capacitive touch solutions provide smoother operation while supporting features such as wet-hand operation and glove mode.
